The Exact Three Step Process I Use to Pursue All Goals
Whether I’m working with a client or myself, I nearly always use the same three-step process for pursuing a goal. Yes, there are exceptions to every rule. However, I always start with this same process before I try another process in the case of an exception.
First, I start by identifying three skills to improve that are critical to reaching the goal. Next, for each of those three skills, I find at least one activity to facilitate practicing that skill. That activity must have a trait that I can use to measure the improvement progression for it to qualify. This progression also serves as a proverbial compass, so I spend the most time getting this step right. Finally, I create a daily routine for those activities which includes tracking the consistency streaks, measuring the progression, and making adjustments.
I use these three steps to help make sure the focus is on the process instead of the outcome. Specifically because research shows that a process mindset is superior to the outcome mindset when it comes to life satisfaction. In addition, these three steps eliminate analysis paralysis.
The next time you find yourself struggling with the “how to” for pursuing a goal, I recommend you give this three-step process a try.
