The Impact of 600 Days in a Row of Writing Daily

Today marks day 600 in a row of my journey of writing everyday. When I started on this journey I had no idea I would make it to this day. The first time I tried to write daily was back in 2012. I only pushed my streak to 45 days in a row back then. I tried again in 2013-2014 extending my streak to 73 days in a row.

The mistake I made during the first two attempts was focusing too much on the streak and not enough on the process. I never found my voice because I wasn’t truly writing with a purpose. This time around is totally different.

My purpose is now clear and hitting some mythical number of days in a row is not it. I’m beyond that. This is the main impact of my success in writing 600 days in a row. I started with a goal of writing daily for 365 days, now my goal is to help sports families, teams, and athletes pursue difficult goals. Over these last 600 days I went from writing for myself to writing for others.

My purpose is to help sports families, teams, and athletes activate the best version of themselves so that pursuing difficult goals feels effortless. The pursuit still takes a tremendous amount of effort. However, it feels effortless because when you tap into the things that make you tick (your innate strengths, passions, and motivations), you enjoy the journey infinitely more than when you don’t.

To conclude, my advice to those who want to learn from my journey to 600 comes down to 5 steps.

  1. Start with a goal that’s both personally satisfying and that taps into your innate strengths, passions and motivations.
  2. Find a process that forces you to do something daily.
  3. Track your consecutive day streaks
  4. As you extend your streak, work towards transforming the goal from being about you to being about helping others.
  5. Keep trying to break your consecutive day streak record until you do it for so long that the streak becomes an effortless part of your life.
