A Simple Explanation of Self-Control vs. Self-Discipline
Both self-control and self-discipline are two critical character traits one must have to achieve a difficult goal. It’s easy to confuse the two and often people use these terms interchangeably. However, there is an important distinction that’s worth remembering.
Self-control is about stopping yourself, self-discipline is about pushing yourself. My wife explains it this way when she gives her talks on this subject.
Self-control is stopping yourself from exhibiting undesirable behaviors, self-discipline is pushing yourself to do the desirable ones.
With that said, self-control and self-discipline are the summation of hundreds of small decisions. Decisions we all face each and every day of our lives to either stop ourselves or push ourselves in moments of temptation for short term pleasure.
