How to Enjoy The Process by Focusing on Three Characteristics

How to Enjoy The Process by Focusing on Three Characteristics

Most people just can’t seem to figure out how to enjoy the process on the way to the outcomes in life they want. It’s no secret that those who enjoy the process have better outcomes than those who don’t. However, the problem is that even when one realizes they aren’t enjoying the process, they don’t know what to do to change this fact.

To answer this question, let’s start by defining the process. I like to define “the process” as the effort one exerts systematically towards an expectation to get something in return. Based on this definition, there are three characteristics that make the process enjoyable.

  1. The actual physical effort of the process is enjoyable.
  2. You like the person or people who are going through the process with you.
  3. What you are getting in return for the process has a relatively high intrinsic value to one’s life.

If Two of these Three Characteristics Remain True, The Process is Nearly Always Enjoyable

When all three of these characteristics are found, the process is always enjoyable. What’s more, you could take away one, and if the other two characteristics remain true, the process is still nearly always enjoyable.

For example, you could not enjoy the physical effort of the process but still enjoy the process overall if you both like the person or people going through the process with you and you value the return you get. In addition, you can still enjoy the process if you don’t like the person or people going through the process with you as long as you enjoy the effort and value the return. Likewise, you could not value the return and still enjoy the process if you like the person or people going through the process with you and you enjoy the physical effort.

Finally, it’s also important to note that the physical effort of the process could only be enjoyable because you like the people around you. Conversely, you could also not enjoy the physical effort not because of the effort in itself, but because you don’t like the people around you. Therefore, it’s important to give extra scrutiny to the people around you as changing that may be all you need to enjoy the process.

So, the next time you find yourself not enjoying the process, think about the relationship between these three characteristics and figure out how you can make at least two of them turn in your favor.
