The Difference Between the Mindset of Affect vs. Effect
Choosing a mindset of affect vs. effect will have a significant impact on how you approach the day from the moment you wake up in the morning. As you may remember from grade school, although affect and effect sound like similar words, there is a drastic difference between them.
Affect is to make a difference. When you have an “affect” mindset you approach the day with the determination to make things happen, to affect the world around you through your behavior. On the other hand, “effect” is a change that is the result of something that was affected. So, when you have an “effect” mindset you approach the day allowing things to happen to you, to let others affect your behavior.
An “affect” mindset requires planning and purpose. An “effect” mindset is passive, emotional, and instinctual. Therefore, if you don’t make an intentional decision to affect things each day, then others will impose their effect on you.
This is not how you want to live. As the saying goes, failure to plan is planning to fail. The mindset of effect is planning to fail. Conversely, the mindset of affect is planning with a purpose.
