How to Increase Your Potential
To increase your potential, I suggest starting with Nick Saban’s definition of potential. He defines it through what he calls the “capability gap“. Hence, Saban’s view is that your potential is equal to the gap between what you are capable of doing and what you are currently doing. Moreover, what you are capable of doing is a product of expectations and expectations are a product of belief.
Therefore, the more you believe in yourself, the higher your expectations. Subsequently, as your expectations increase with your belief, your potential increases. So, if you want to increase your potential you must first believe you are capable of doing more.
Then, after that, surround yourself with other people who believe in themselves, and let their positive energy transfer to you so your belief gets stronger. Lastly, I want to note that when one person believes in you, it can reaffirm your existing belief. However, when many people believe in you, it can confirm belief that is in doubt and create a belief that you are capable of doing even more than you thought. Correspondingly, the more people who believe in you, the more your potential increases.
To sum this up, to increase your potential you must do four things:
- Set high expectations for yourself.
- Believe you are capable of meeting those expectations and capable of doing even more.
- Surround yourself with other people who have high expectations and believe in themselves.
- Find coaches, mentors, and peers who also believe in you and allow them to hold you accountable to fulfilling your potential.
