How to Know You Will Need a Coach to Help You Achieve a Goal

Before you commit to a new goal, you will consider two variables. First, you will consider how difficult it is to achieve the goal. Then, you will consider how long it will take to achieve it.

Most often these thoughts will come and go naturally as you think about a new goal without a formal process of figuring out the precise answers. Even still, these informal thoughts have a big impact on your commitment to a goal.

For example, if you think a goal is too difficult and it will take too long you are likely to push that goal to the back of your mind within days. Indeed, you can break these two variables into four different commitment patterns:

  1. Easy goal with immediate results: Commitment will be high.
  2. Easy goal but takes a long time to achieve: Commitment will be high initially but will need a system of reinforcement.
  3. Difficult goal with immediate results: Commitment will be high if motivation for the result is high.
  4. Difficult goal that takes a long time to achieve:  Will avoid commitment.

As you can see, how one views these two variables will strongly dictate their commitment. When something is difficult or requires a long process it’s frustrating and natural to avoid. Despite this, the best things in life are on the other side of both. If you ever find yourself struggling to commit because these variables are causing your commitment to wane, this is a case when you know you will need a coach to help you achieve that goal.
