How Elite Athletes Make Decisions
Elite athletes are elite not by birth, but by behavior. In other words, what separates elite athletes from everyone else are decisions. When to practice, what to practice, and how to practice are among many other decisions that make them elite.
Moreover, to replicate the success of an elite athlete, the details of the decisions are not as important as how they make those decisions. If you know how they make decisions, then you can apply that thinking to any given decision you may face.
With this in mind, the first thing you must know about how elite athletes make decisions is that they do everything within their control to make as few decisions as possible. This means they create a master plan that includes as many daily, weekly, and monthly routines as possible. A master plan forces you to make decisions up front. Bedtime, wake-up time, free time, family time, travel, mentor check-ins, deadlines, milestones, practice, recovery, and how you will measure progress are all predefined and put on a schedule.
Doing this is difficult, but doing what’s difficult is what makes elite athletes elite. Simply stated, elite athletes make decisions by deciding once, then sticking with their plan.
- Elite athletes don’t make emotional decisions in the moment or let how they feel decide their behavior.
- They invest in creating a master plan of daily habits and routines to eliminate as many decisions from their daily life as possible.
- They say no to anything that negatively impacts their master plan.
