Counterpoint: Talent is Not What You Have, It’s What You Do with What You Have
Most people think of talent as something you have. For example, fast twitch muscles that make you athletic or a creative mind that makes you artistic. Moreover, most people think of talent as something people are born with.
While it’s true that research suggests that talent is something nature can give you, it also shows it’s nurtured. The fact is you have no control over your nature. Your parents had some control, but you have none. So, there is no reason to dwell on whether you won the genetic lottery.
Indeed, there are more tall people who don’t play professional basketball than who do. Subsequently, the genetics you are born with are more of a gift than a talent. People waste gifts all the time. But only a fool would waste something they nurtured.
Unquestionably, nurturing talent takes time and effort. Therefore, talent is not what you have, it’s what you do with what you have. What’s more, this means it’s best to orient your mindset around the idea that there is no such thing as “natural” talent.
