Nick Saban Breaks Down Potential So Athletes Can Understand It
Nick Saban is not only one of the greatest coaches of all-time, he’s also one of the best at taking complex ideas and making them simple. He is right up there with John Wooden when it comes to this. It’s a skill that allows him to get college age athletes to do what most don’t want to do, to achieve what they all want to achieve.
With that said, today I came across a tweet from ESPN journalist Holly Rowe that illustrates perfectly Saban’s uncanny ability to break things down into simple terms. Rowe tweets a video of Saban breaking down what it really means to have potential.
Saban states the following:
We often times talk about what someone’s potential is. But I think to put it in better terms that is understandable [it’s] the capability gap. [The capability gap] is what you are capable of, relative to what you are doing… People should be aware of that…
…If you understand the truth about that, you can actually take information to help you close that gap. Hopefully if you are a competitor and want to do well in the world that’s something you’re interested in doing.
