Three Truth’s About Sustained Success in Sports
Success is not an event. It’s not something you put on a vision board and manifest using some metaphysical secret either. Success is something you grow into by using your time to do the right thing, with the right people, the right way, on most, if not all days.
This is not a glamourous story to tell, but the process to achieve success in sports is not glamourous. I love a great movie montage of an athlete going from zero to hero as much as anyone, but don’t let those montages fool you. Here are the facts.
- Great athletes weren’t born great, and they didn’t become great by enduring some transformational 6-week training camp either. They became great through hard work, emotional intelligence, and perseverance over many years.
- Luck has very little impact on success. Strategic mental and physical training, good coaching, and planned recovery cycles are the key.
- You can’t copy someone else’s path to success even if you know exactly what they did step by step. While there are clues you can follow, your ultimate path to success is unique.
