Parents with Closed Minds Close Doors

Parents with Closed Minds Close Doors

Over the last three years I’ve talked to hundreds of parents about what I do as a mental skills coach. At this point I now understand that parents with closed minds close doors. Some parents are just not open to understanding how mental skills training can help their children as much as physical skills training.

A parent with a closed mind is only willing to do things the way they’ve always done them. These parents are more than willing to keep doing the same thing while expecting different results.

  • Weight training, check.
  • Speed and conditioning, check.
  • Camps and private coaching, check.
  • Mental training, “nope…my kid doesn’t need that…

From my perspective, I can no longer waste time trying to open doors for parents who completely close the door to mental skills training. The truth is mental skills training only works for those who trust that they can train their minds to open new doors to better results.

  1. If you think writing goals on the back of a napkin is just as good as a rigorous goal setting process, then I can’t help you.
  2. If you think the only way to teach your child how to be mentally tough is by yelling and pushing them to overtrain with excessive conditioning, then I can’t help you.
  3. Moreover, if you think using rewards and punishments is the best way to get your child to perform better under pressure, then I can’t help you.

The Journey Matters in Mental Skills Training

On the other hand, if you have even the slightest hunch that the process matters as much as the outcome then I can help you, as this is the bottom line for mental skills training. The journey matters.

The difference between athletes who enjoy what they do each day and those who only enjoy game day is immense. Learning how to tap into this power of loving the journey is the foundation for all other mental skills.

If this makes sense to you, let’s talk about how I can work with your child to use their mental skills to not only enjoy working harder, but to also learn how to work smarter. You can contact me here.
