The #1 Reason Why People Set Goals and Why This Matters
Achieving a goal will make your happy, albeit temporarily. But would you be happy if you achieved a goal you didn’t set? To put it differently, is it even mentally possible for you to accept that you’ve achieved a goal that you never set? Technically, it’s not possible unless you have a time machine or fake it.
It’s like creating a checklist at the end of the day by writing down what you randomly did that day, then checking it off as if you accomplished your mission. While that may provide some people a sense of satisfaction as a form of reflection, you can’t accomplish a mission when there is no mission.
With this in mind, your goals are your mission. Moreover, the #1 reason why you set goals is to give yourself a mission, which then gives you purpose, which then gives you motivation, which then gives you guard rails to self-regulate your behavior.
This chain of benefits you get from setting goals makes goal setting a critical part of personal growth. This matters for two reasons:
- If you aren’t setting goals with clarity and intent, you are missing out on one of the single best ways to improve your life.
- If your goals aren’t providing you with a mission, purpose, and the motivation to self-regulate your behavior, you are not getting the most out of the goal setting process.
