John Wooden Quote Sums Up the 3 Goals of Mental Skills Training

John Wooden is known for his many great quotes. As arguably the most quotable coach in history, it should be of no surprise that he has a fantastic quote that sums up the goal of mental skills training very eloquently.

In his book Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court, Wooden has a chapter in which he explains his view on how to bring out your best. While providing that explanation Wooden writes the following:

Focus all of your effort on what is within your power to control. Conditioning is one of those things. How your mind functions is another.

Unquestionably, this is the essence of mental skills training.

  1. Focusing on what you control
  2. Conditioning
  3. Learning functional skills to master the 5 elements that define your mindset: thoughts, emotions, perceptions, values, and behaviors
