How to Know If the Work You’re Doing Does NOT Matter

This is a post about work that does NOT matter. This is NOT a post about work that is necessary. So, just because some bit of work does NOT matter does NOT mean it’s NOT necessary work.

With that out of the way, next let’s look at the word “matter” so it’s put in context. To put the word “matter” in the context of work, the work must make a significant difference. For this to be true, in comparison to all other work, work that matters must be unique in its impact. On the other hand, work that does NOT matter is NOT unique, i.e. everyone and anyone can and does do it.

This is the point. Putting in the work that everyone else does may be necessary, but that’s NOT the work that matters. You get in the game with that work, but you don’t win the game with that work.

Therefore, the work that nearly everyone either overlooks or finds too difficult to stay consistent with is the only work that matters. Any work that does NOT meet this criteria is work that does NOT matter. To reiterate, you still must do work that does NOT matter. However, don’t expect a reward for doing that type of work.

Rewards are only earned by those who do work that matters. While this may seem blunt and simplistic, it’s simply a fact that rewards in a competitive environment are scarce. By definition then, the only way to get what most people can’t get is to do what most people either won’t or can’t do.
