What’s the Point of a 1000 Day Consistency Streak?
I write and publish in this blog every single day. This is not hyperbole either. When I say every single day, I mean every single day. In fact, three days ago was the 1000th day in a row of me writing and publishing a mental skills or mindset article in this blog. So, after I hit the publish button on this article it will be my 1003rd day in a row of being consistent.
On day one, my goal was to only write for 74 days in a row, surpassing my original consistency streak of 73 days. Once I reached that goal, I then aspired to write for 365 days in a row. After hitting that goal, I no longer set specific numbers as goals. Instead, my only goal is to stay consistent with my behavior.
This is the point I want to make. Consistency is not about reaching a specific outcome. Consistency is a lifestyle choice. A choice that is a defining character trait. Can you trust yourself to do what you say you will do?
When you can’t trust yourself to do what you say you will do, you can’t reach your potential. Personal growth will always be difficult, and you won’t be able to accomplish many meaningful goals. If you constantly let yourself down, you will let others down too. Moreover, this will develop into a debilitating habit that will define you.
My takeaway for you today is to not let this happen. Consistency is a muscle that weakens faster than it strengthens. This means that it’s at least twice as hard to be consistent than it is to quit. Furthermore, consistency only last as you are exercising it, while quitting last forever.
Therefore, you must be deliberate with your behavior in how you practice consistency. In other words, you must commit to being consistent with your entire being. Writing may not be your thing like it is for me, but there is something in your life you can commit to forming a consistency streak with. My suggestion is that you find that one thing and own it like your future depends on it, because it does.
