Create a Never Ending Goal to Avoid This Ancient Chinese Curse

One of my favorite authors Dan Millman introduced me to what he framed as an “ancient Chinese curse” that took me a few moments to understand. It’s rather simple yet confusing at first to why it’s a curse. It goes like this:

May you achieve all your goals and dreams.

When I first read this I thought, hmm…why is this a curse. It took a moment but then it hit me. If you achieve all your goals and dreams, then what do you do next? What will then be your purpose to continue to grow? As the saying goes, you are either growing or dying. So, once you achieve all your goals and dreams all you have left to do is die.

That’s quite a curse. One I’m sure you’ll want to avoid. With that said, there is no better way to avoid this than to create a never ending goal. A never ending goal is not a goal you never achieve. On the contrary, it’s a goal you continue to achieve forever. The type of goal I’m talking about is a routine streak goal.

For example, today is my 819th day in a row publishing in this blog.  Before this streak my personal best was 73 days, and before that 45 days.  One of the reasons I can continue day after day is my motivation to extend my streak.

If and when my streak ends, I will just have another streak goal to beat when I restart.  This is a never ending goal. When one streak ends, another streak begins. What’s more, I will never achieve all my goals and therefore can never face the ancient Chinese curse. I highly suggest you find a routine streak of your own and do the same to avoid the fate of the ancient Chinese curse.
