Why Average People Have Average Self-Awareness
Nobody thinks of themself as being average and almost everybody thinks of themself as being above average. How can this be? If no one is average how can anyone be above average?
Statistically speaking this is impossible once you narrow down the parameters that calculate the average. However, who gets to decide those parameters? Indeed, the person who makes that decision has the power to define average. In fact, I would argue making that decision for yourself is the secret to success.
If you can control the power to define the parameters for calculating average, then you can guarantee yourself a spot on the above average side. However, the only way to do this is to know what makes you above average. That requires the emotional intelligence trait of self-awareness.
Consequently, it follows that average people have average self-awareness and above-average people have above average self-awareness. So, if someone believes they’re above-average but can’t identify the parameters that explain why, then that person not only lacks self-awareness they’re also not above-average.
