What You Should Do When Practice Doesn’t Make Perfect
Practice makes perfect may be the most overused quote in the world. First of all, this quote is a flat out lie. Practice does not make perfect. Unquestionably, only perfect practice makes perfect.
With this in mind, the first thing you should do once you realize that your practice isn’t making perfect is stop practicing. Why? Because making the same mistakes repeatedly in practice will do nothing more than make those mistakes habits.
Instead of practicing, the mindset must shift to training as training has a different purpose than practice. The sole purpose of training is to get better. With training the focus is on developing the muscle memory you need to perform skills the right way starting with the fundamentals. On the other hand, practice is about testing and repeating the skills you already know.
In short, if a skill is being performed wrong repeatedly, you must stop performing that skill. Then, instead of just practicing more figure out what training you need to get better.
