Eliminating The Biggest Roadblock to Personal Growth

Eliminating The Biggest Roadblock to Personal Growth

Personal growth comes down to change and change is hard. The reason why change is hard is because it’s uncomfortable. As a result, most people will do whatever it takes to delay change as long as they can. When it comes to the type of change associated with personal growth, this delay is almost always done unconsciously.

Most people won’t admit they don’t want to go through the changes required for personal growth. So they create unconscious roadblocks to keep from feeling bad about themselves. The biggest of these unconscious roadblocks is convincing oneself there is a need for something external before one can get started.

For example, let’s say you decide you want to be an author. However, you then say you will start writing your first book once you get a new computer. The problem is the computer you want cost over $1,000 and you need to save up to get it. Thus, your goal of becoming an author is now on hold until you save the money to get a new computer.

This process of creating an unconscious roadblock plays out over and over keeping all types of people from taking action. Maybe you are waiting to get a new pair of fancy running shoes to start training for a marathon. Or maybe you’re waiting to get a certification in a field before you start working in an area of passion. It really could be anything big or small you are using to convince yourself that you’re not ready. However, the truth is you were ready the moment the idea to change popped in your head.

The only way to eliminate this type of roadblock is to first acknowledge it exist, and then admit that you don’t need anything you don’t already have to get started. It’s a mind game with yourself. All personal growth starts with accepting what you have and where you are now is all you need to take the first of many steps to get what you want and where you want to go.

In short, if you are serious about the change you want to make you must take action regardless of how rudimentary the action is. If you don’t take action, you are not serious about the change and are just joking with yourself.
