To Get Better at Something Either Do More of Less or Less of More
There is only so much time in the day. So if you want to get better at something, then you must use your time wisely. That’s why it’s best to choose one of two paths to better depending on your experience level.
Path 1: Do Less of More
If you’re new to the activity you want to get better at, then this means you need more exposure. At this point, you don’t know what you don’t know. As a result, the best way to improve in this novice stage is to get exposure by doing less of more. In doing this, you can figure out what’s important, who’s important and why it’s important. This understanding alone will help you get better, at least enough to no longer be a novice.
Path 2: Do More of Less
Once you have experience, the best way to get better is mastery. At this point you should already have a specific understanding of what’s important versus what’s just a nice to have. This understanding is what allows you to know exactly what specific things you need to master in order to get better. Once you know this, do more work on these specific things and less of everything else.
