How To Increase The Chance Your Child Will Reach Their Potential
There is nothing a parent wants more than to raise a child who reaches their potential. Parents spend thousands of dollars per year on private coaching, tutoring, camps, and numerous other things to help their children maximize potential. However, how do parents know if this money is well spent?
While it’s true there is no definitive answer to this question without hindsight, there is a way to increase the chance of being right. Potential is a product of three things:
- Talent
- The innate motivation to invest in that talent so it becomes a strength
- The ability to convert that strength into something valuable to society
With that said, when a parent invest in a talent that a child does not have the motivation to turn it into a strength, it’s likely a bad investment. As a rule of thumb, in order to turn a talent into a strength, you must start with something you truly love to do.
When you have self-motivation because you love to do something, it’s by far easier to reach your potential in that area. This is because the hard work and drudgery one must invest to turn a talent into a strength doesn’t feel so bad when you enjoy what you are doing. On the other hand, when you don’t enjoy what you are doing you will resist hard work and drudgery in every moment.
So if a parent wants to increase the chances of their child reaching their potential, they should invest their money on developing skills that are both innately interesting to their child and valuable to society.
