The Overlooked Legal Performance Enhancer
When it comes to performance enhancers, all the focus is always on the illegal stuff. What about the performance enhancers that aren’t illegal? Do they even exist? Of course they do!
There is one legal performance enhancer in particular that people overlook so much that they ought to be ashamed.
This performance enhancer is called self-motivation.
The best example of this is in the behavior of children. When a child does something he or she enjoys (i.e. play video games), they tend to put all of their energy and effort into doing that activity to the best of their ability. On the other hand, when a child has to do something because their parents force them to do it, that child won’t complete the task nearly as well.
Now imagine two young athletes competing against each other with all things being equal but motivation. One of the athletes has self-motivation because they love playing the sport more than any other thing. The other athlete’s motivation comes from the external pressure from a parent. Who do you think will win? Who do you think practices harder? Unquestionably, I would put my money on the one with the self-motivation.
That is why self-motivation is a performance enhancer. Passion, purpose, and enjoyment all drive this self-motivation. Without passion, purpose, and enjoyment, it’s exponentially harder to be at your best, let alone compete against someone who has these things.
In short, if you need to enhance your performance, find a way to do more of what you love or to love more of what you’re doing.
