Defining the New Normal in the Next Phase of Your Journey
I love charting the journey from average to good to great. It’s a journey all those who reach great must go on. Not even the most talented among us start at great. As a result, the journey is universal.
What’s also universal is that in every stage of this journey there is a new normal. When you’re average, it may be normal to work on your craft a few days a week when you feel like it. When you’re good, the norm changes to a consistent routine that’s executed seasonally. Then once you move to great, normal changes again.
The normal for great goes beyond just what you do, it becomes also about how you do it. What’s more, the normal for great goes beyond just physical preparation, it becomes also about mental preparation.
With this in mind, it’s a powerful exercise to write down what you think the new normal will be as you progress to the next phase in your journey. It’s a fact that you can’t do what you are doing now and get different results. So changing what’s normal for you is a must. However, change doesn’t happen overnight. Change is a process.
When you write down what normal looks like once you have next level behaviors, you can visualize the baby steps you can take daily to get there. It’s in these baby steps where your new normal will slowly start to replace your old normal and great will slowly start to replace good.
