A Key to Happiness: Manage Your Primary Source of Happiness
As I began writing this I initially had the audacity to title this post “The Key to Happiness.” However, before I could write the first word I instinctively humbled myself and changed the title to “A Key to Happiness.”
So here’s my disclaimer. I’m no happiness guru. I have many questions and I’m astue enough to seek out answers from those smarter than me. With that said, there are many keys to happiness. Today, I will share one that I believe is critically important.
Your primary source of happiness must only come from things you can control. It’s unhealthy if your current belief system limits your happiness to external sources. Here are two primary examples:
- You can control process, but you can’t control outcomes.
- You can control how you treat people, but you can’t control how people treat you.
If you derive your happiness from process and how you treat people you can be as happy as you want when you want. On the other hand, if you derive your happiness from outcomes and how other people treat you then you are destined to be unhappy more often than not.
