Two Choices to Pursue Personal Growth to Change Yourself for the Better
We all have two choices to make once we decide to pursue personal growth to change ourselves for the better. We can decide to change for the short term or we can decide to change for the long term.
When someone focuses on the short term there is a heavy emphasis on will power and external motivation. For example, in the short term incentives like losing weight to fit an outfit for a reunion party would work to motivate living a healthy lifestyle temporarily. For 30 days, most people can avoid dessert, bread, and pasta. In the short term, most people can use will power to push themselves to workout 4 days a week. However, after someone reaches their short term goal, the will power ceases and the external motivation is gone.
On the other hand, when someone focuses on the long term there is a heavy emphasis on self-motivation and purpose. In the long term, a lifestyle change is necessary. This change requires an individual to understand themselves from the inside out. Then change their priorities and take advantage of their innate strengths. What’s more, defining an overarching purpose for life that taps into their passions also provides the fuel needed to sustain these changes over the long haul.
In short, before anyone embarks on any lifestyle change in pursuit of personal growth, the first thing that should be done is decide if they are in it for the short or long term.
