A Definition of Hustle That Makes Hard Workers Rethink Everything
Hard workers work hard. That’s what makes them hard workers. However, do hard workers make progress? That is debatable.
Obviously, some hard workers make progress. But not all hard workers make progress. Many hard workers stay busy being busy, but don’t know how to stay busy doing things that matter.
This is where this definition of hustle I recently read comes into play. This definition is from author, blogger, and speaker John Acuff. Acuff defines hustle as:
Hustle is doing important things others aren’t willing to do.
When I read that I immediately started to rethink everything I was doing in the name of “hard work”. Do I work hard on important things or on things that are urgent, but not important? Is my hard work directed towards things others aren’t willing to do?
As I thought through these two questions I slowly began to realize that there are only a few things in my life that I work hard at that I can answer yes to both of these questions. This is a stark realization for a person who prides himself on the virtues of hard work.
Ultimately, this definition of hustle is the perfect litmus test for a person who is always busy but struggling to make progress.
