Raising “Indistractable” Children is the New Next Big Thing for Parents
First thing first, what the heck does the word “indistractable” mean? According to a recent article on CNBC, “indistractable is the most important skill for the 21st century — and it’s one that many parents fail to teach their kids.”
It also just so happens that the author of this article Nir Eyal wrote the book on this word. This is a big reason why this word is trending in the United States. As you read this, indistractable is on the rise to one of the hottest trending search terms on Google.
But again, what does raising indistractable children really mean?
In short, the definition of indistractable is not able to be distracted. Eyal proclaims it’s the most important skill for the 21st century as a result of the rise in omnipresent technology. This omnipresent technology is specifically designed by its creators to make users addicts. Furthermore, once you are a technology addict, you’re no longer in control of your time.
Eyal makes this case by summing of the future of humanity into two categories:
…in the future, there will be two kinds of people in the world: Those who let their attention and lives be controlled and coerced by others and those who proudly call themselves “indistractable.”
To overstate the obvious, a critical goal parents should have in raising their children is to help them be part of this indistractable class.
