Another Definition of Success from John Wooden You Should Memorize

A couple months ago I wrote about John Wooden’s definition of success. I saw this definition while reading John Wooden’s book Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court.

This morning I came across another definition from John Wooden that is slightly different, just as good, and worth memorizing.

Wooden states:

Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.

What I appreciate about this definition of success is Wooden’s focus on self. Unquestionably, this definition makes it clear that only you can define success for yourself. For some success may include the accumulation of material wealth. For others, success is more altruistic. The bottom line is that success is about what you think of yourself and not what others think of you.

In addition, I also appreciate how Wooden starts with the term peace of mind in this definition. Without doubt, a fleeting moment of success is both a stress reliever and a signal for your mind to simply let go. Sometimes just daydreaming about success brings this calmness, but there is nothing like the real thing. So this peace of mind Wooden starts with in this definition really taps into the true mental state of success.
