How Sports Parents Can Avoid Living Vicariously Through Their Kids
I don’t have to explain why living vicariously through your children is a problem. It’s pretty obvious. What’s not so obvious is how to overcome this powerful gravitational pull. Especially if you are a former athlete raising an athletic child.
As a former athlete who didn’t reach all of my goals, I struggled with this for almost 4 years. I know first hand how difficult it is to overcome vicarious living when you see the opportunity for your children to achieve what you missed out on. So far I have found only one solution that’s a guaranteed fix for this problem.
“PURPOSE”
Purpose is the solution. But what is purpose?
- Purpose is in the place where you are best equipped to do the most to help others.
- When time is not a factor, purpose is in those things you are most inspired to create and do.
- If you were as successful as you could possibly imagine, purpose is in those areas where you would want to give money to support.
If you have enough self-awareness to admit that you are living vicariously through your kids, then finding purpose is how you avoid making things worse. I know for a fact that every parent living vicariously through their children’s athletic career is missing out on living their best life. In addition, finding your purpose it’s the best way to take the pressure off your kids and put the fun back into their sports journey. I can’t stress this enough.
I will be the first to admit that redesigning your life to push yourself to find purpose instead of pushing your child is a radical mental shift. It can be downright scary as you must come out of your comfort zone.
However, if you are willing to take this step you will redefine your legacy and inspire your child more than you can imagine. I can attest that the risk is worth it. If you want to know more about my journey and want help with yours, please contact me here.
