The Silent Dream Killer That Can Only Be Stopped with Mental Toughness
Two days ago I shared 15 statements to define mental toughness inside-out. One of those statements is as follows:
Mental toughness is the ability to keep promises to yourself and others even when it’s inconvenient.
The truth is that it’s very easy to break promises to yourself. Much easier than breaking a promise to someone else important to you when they are counting on you to deliver. That’s why it requires mental toughness to avoid this destroyer of trust.
Furthermore, if you fail to keep the promises you make to yourself enough times, it will become a habit that requires even more mental toughness to break. The first time you break a promise to yourself, it’s hard. You have a sense of guilt, and feel bad that you didn’t hold yourself accountable. The second time you do this, it gets easier. The third time, you don’t even think about it. Then, from that point forward promises made to yourself mean nothing.
Unquestionably, nothing kills dreams faster than having a habit of breaking promises to yourself like this.
