The Four Domains of Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is defined by a person’s ability to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions and the emotions of others. Psychologist believe that emotional intelligence is a learned behavior. In order to master it, four domains of emotional intelligence are necessary:

  1. Self-awareness
  2. Self-management
  3. Social awareness
  4. Relationship management

These four domains were originally popularized by author Daniel Goleman in his book Working with Emotional Intelligence, which is a follow-up to his original work on the subject Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. Since the time of these writing, Goleman’s concepts on emotional intelligence have become somewhat of a defacto standard.

With that said, over the next 4 days I will look at Goleman’s research in the context of each of these domains and share the best practices for developing each area in a child.
