What to do if your blog post aren’t being shared?
Every writer wants their blog post to spread. I write everyday with the hope that my ideas are inspirational and insightful enough to get shared by others on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. The hard truth is that at this point, most of the time they’re not.
This problem led me to spend some time researching what makes ideas spread. I found many of the tips generally fell into three categories:
- Write with the purpose of stirring emotions such as humor, anger, or fear
- Using offers such as contest and giveaways to encourage sharing
- Get better at writing headlines / titles that encourage clicking and sharing
Many of the ideas I found in the three categories above were very practical, especially if being applied to selling a product. However, in the case of a personal blog, none of them really were authentic enough for me to apply in my situation.
My continued research lead me to Seth Godin’s Blog. He writes the following in his blog post titled How big is critical mass?
If your idea isn’t spreading, one reason might be that it’s for too many people. Or it might be because the cohort that appreciates it isn’t tightly connected. When you focus on a smaller, more connected group, it’s far easier to make an impact.
This make sense to me. This I can apply.
The group of people I want to reach are those who want a higher level of success in life. This group also believes personal growth, self-knowledge, wisdom, and mental skills are among the most important keys to reach that success. Now, the goal is to narrow this focus so I can make an impact among this group.
